  Oil filter seal is perished compare to new seal.JPG - Since an oil change is going as part of this project, I changed the filter. I saw some troublesome debris on the end of the filter can (the original style which uses either the roll of felt or the cartridge oil filter element) and removed the gasket, which had seen several oil changes. Removing the gasket and installing a new one adds the risk that you don't get the gasket perfectly seated, so I don't do so unless I need to. The replacement gasket is on the right. I use the thinnest gasket that comes with the cartridge filter.
